About This Blog

For the past few months I've been hearing all about how blogging has become a phenomenon and how it leads to an even more diversity of opinions than the traditional media. So I decided to try one for the heck of it.

I am the person behind a totally twisted site called Twisted Unicorn that is full of animated parodies. A few years ago I opened a LiveJournal account where I would spew my opinions on a variety of topics, including politics, religion, the Internet, nasty people, etc. The LiveJournal linked to my Twisted Unicorn site and I viewed it as a way to quickly update my site with new content since creating animations is a very time-consuming process compared to just writing. But then the LiveJournal took a turn towards the person when I discovered a book on how to beat my addiction to all things sugar and I began to lose weight.

Well, anyway, based on what I've read on sites like Fairvue Central, blogs are supposed to be less personal and full of links. A friend of mine has started his own blog on technology in general and, more specifically, on bridging the digital divide, how to create websites on a shoestring budget, etc.

I finally got an inspiration for a blog of my own when I went through my collection of Playstation and Playstation 2 video games and I made an amazing discovery. The vast majority of videogames in my collection are based on the old arcade games of the 1970's and 1980's. The reason why I bought so many of them is because I have such fond memories of playing them in the arcade that I was overjoyed when they were being released for the Sony platform.

Don't get me wrong. I have played and enjoyed newer games like Kingdom Hearts. But many of the newer games are time-consuming to play and there are times when I just want to play a quick game and I don't have the time to spend slowly going through Kingdom Hearts so I'll pull out something like Frogger or Burgertime and relive my youth when I spent many quarters in the local video arcade. (I don't even want to consider how much money I have spent in those arcades during my childhood, teen, and young adult years.)

I've searched Google for other blogs that dealt with classic videogames and I've noticed that the vast majority of them are not for strictly discussing videogames. In other words, you frequently have to wade through someone else's blog entries on politics, religion, or personal angst that you don't give a hoot about just to get to the relevant entries about a particular game.

I decided that this blog will be strictly about classic videogames only. I won't discuss my own personal angst here. Nor will I discuss politics (unless it's about some stupid politician who is holding hearings about how videogames corrupt youths) or religion (unless it's about some religious leader who is holding a burning of videogames).

One other thing, this will NOT be a news site where you can get the latest news on--let's say--the latest Final Fantasy sequel. (If you are dying for the latest videogames news, visit IGN.com.) In fact, I won't mention any videogames that are less than five years old.

This blog is more concerned with videogames that have withstood the test of time. Many of the videogames mentioned here are as fondly remembered by videogaming enthusiasts as many old classic movies (such as "Casablanca"). In fact, some games, such as Pac-Man, continue to gain a new generation of enthusiasts in the same was as "The Wizard of Oz" continues to fascinate a new generation.

Another reason for focusing on classic videogames is that I don't have the time to be writing a new blog on a daily basis. With focusing on classic videogames, I don't have to worry about the content being timely.

Each blog entry will focus on a game from the past along with links to sites where you can purchase a copy of that game or try playing the game for free. (Many classic games have been converted into Flash or Director by videogame enthusiasts.)

I hope you'll enjoy this trip down memory lane that I will provide for you.a

Comment Ah yes, memory lane. Enjoyed very much what you wrote about popeye and pong. I have a popeye arcade game, and not only me, but all the kids love to play it. Good luck with the blog, Ralph Bruno
